opinions?

like Hank and John Green, i'm starting to think possibly i have more opinions than i need about things that don't matter very much.

for example, i think i'm going to relinquish my opinions on other people's opinions of music. like this: instead of:

"you like this? clearly you have inferior taste,"

i'd like to try an attitude more like:

"this isn't really my style, but that doesn't make you tasteless or *ehm* "basic" (as the kids say) for liking it. by the way, what do you like about it? (because there's a good chance that we're appreciating entirely different goals of the music.)"

i want to be quicker to seek understanding than to judge.

p.s.: it may be unnecessary, but it's really fun to add "as the kids say" after colloquialisms that are more often used by generations just barely (or not even) younger than myself to make it seem like i'm being ironic, even though i'm actually not. especially if it is decidedly not something the kids say anymore.

p.p.s.: here is a video that contributed to inspiring this post. it is mildly thought-provoking and entertaining, and also mostly irrelevant and unnecessary for context:

  1. i have many thoughts in response but all of them have a dismally low syllable-to-substance ratio so i'll sum them up with "this is an excellent idea and will likely make you more of what you are, rather than less, which i think is a good thing for you and the world."
