sometimes trying to figure out just the right thing to say to or do for someone is like walking out of blinding light into a house you've been in only one time ever with absolutely no light at all, and trying to find a small and specific random item hidden somewhere, using only your sense of touch and your limited knowledge of the house. in such situations, i often say nothing at all, which isn't always the right thing either.
i agree.
ReplyDeletei feel better reminding myself that truly helping someone (from the perspective of my own giftings and personality anyway) makes almost mandatory an ongoing investment in that someone relationally. if i cannot establish that as a commitment, then i must admit that they are less my neighbor than someone i can be committed to long-term.
